Substance Use Disorders

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are characterized by a pattern of compulsive drug use that leads to significant problems and distress in the user’s life. These patterns of abuse, known as addiction, can manifest differently depending on the type of substance abused. Similarly, symptoms may range from mild to severe and are often accompanied by other mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.

In general, substance abuse is categorized into two main types: alcohol and other drugs. No matter the type of substance used, addiction can have an adverse impact on physical and mental health, relationships with family and friends, work life, and social functioning.

While the causes of SUDs vary, there are a number of risk factors that may increase an individual’s vulnerability to substance abuse. These include genetics, early exposure to drugs or alcohol in the home, mental illness or trauma in childhood, and social environment.

Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol use disorder (AUD), more commonly known as alcoholism, is a chronic condition in which a person loses the ability to control their consumption of alcohol. Alcohol abuse can have substantial physical, mental, and social consequences left untreated. For this reason, those who suffer from alcoholism generally require professional treatment.

AUD is characterized by persistent and excessive alcohol consumption over extended periods, often accompanied by symptoms like loss of control, physical dependence, and cravings that make it challenging to abstain when desired.

AUD carries significant potential consequences, such as an elevated risk of alcohol poisoning, motor vehicle accidents, physical harm, overdose, and even suicide attempts. Moreover, alcohol use disorder can give rise to various social challenges, including domestic violence, strained relationships, difficulties in academic or professional settings, legal entanglements, and financial hardships.

Alcohol abuse is strongly linked to mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. AUD can profoundly affect physical well-being, leading to enduring and severe bodily harm, including increased susceptibility to stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver complications, and brain damage.

Drug Use Disorder

Drug use disorders encompass a wide range of substances with a risk of abuse. Examples include opioids, marijuana, stimulants, hallucinogens, and inhalants.

While the general public considers certain psychoactive drugs to be less dangerous than others, all addictive substances can result in dependence and addiction. Regardless of a person’s intentions, substance abuse of any form can have detrimental physical, mental, and emotional effects.

Individuals who engage in drug use often initially believe they have control over their habit. However, as substance abuse persists, they frequently experience a loss of control that affects various aspects of their lives. Addiction takes hold, compelling individuals to prioritize their substance use despite the adverse outcomes. Consequently, those struggling with drug abuse may lose sight of their priorities, prioritizing getting high over their health, careers, and relationships.

Drug abuse has far-reaching consequences, extending beyond relationships and encompassing significant health implications. It can give rise to severe medical conditions like heart attacks, strokes, and organ damage. Additionally, drug abuse can induce short-term and long-term alterations in mental and behavioral patterns, impacting the individual’s quality of life.

Drug Addictions We Treat

Drug addiction comes in different forms, ranging from casual drug use to addiction to prescription medications. It can also stem from mental health problems like depression and anxiety. Drug addiction can have serious consequences and must be addressed with care regardless of its manifestation. Identifying the signs of addiction in yourself or your loved one may not be easy, but seeking help as soon as possible is crucial.

Opiates and Opioids

Opioids are a category of medications prescribed for managing moderate to severe pain. They bind to the brain’s opioid receptors, alleviating pain. While these substances can be beneficial for individuals experiencing chronic pain, it is critical to note that they have the potential to be habit-forming and carry a significant risk of abuse.

Opioids are a type of medication that can be naturally occurring or manufactured. The naturally occurring types are called opiates, such as morphine and codeine, which derive from opium. Manufactured opioids include drugs like heroin and fentanyl.

Individuals may turn to opioids to alleviate pain, mitigate anxiety or depression, or even enhance feelings of pleasure. Nonetheless, the misuse of opioids can rapidly escalate into addiction. Prolonged use of opioids can harm the body, including organ damage, a compromised immune system, cognitive impairments, and, in severe cases, fatality.

Stimulants

Prescription stimulants belong to a drug class commonly prescribed for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. These stimulants target the central nervous system, enhancing alertness, concentration, and energy levels. While they can benefit individuals diagnosed with these conditions, it is crucial to acknowledge that stimulants also carry the potential for abuse, which can have severe health ramifications.

Misusing illicit stimulants, including methamphetamine and cocaine, poses significant risks and can lead to severe consequences. Individuals who abuse these substances are susceptible to addiction and may encounter various adverse effects, such as agitation, paranoia, elevated heart rate, seizures, strokes, and, in extreme cases, sudden death. Despite the inherent dangers associated with stimulant abuse, some individuals still misuse these drugs for weight loss, heightened energy levels, and improved focus.

Sedatives and Anxiolytics

Barbiturates

Barbiturates are a drug class for treating conditions like anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. Operating by depressing the central nervous system and reducing brain activity, these drugs possess sedative and hypnotic properties. However, barbiturates are highly addictive and pose a significant risk of overdose or fatality. It is vital to exercise caution and seek professional guidance when using these substances.

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are medications prescribed for managing anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. As synthetic anxiolytics, these drugs function by augmenting the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This mechanism produces a calming effect, aiding in reducing anxiety symptoms.

It is crucial to recognize that benzodiazepines have the potential for addiction and can lead to physical dependence, particularly when taken in high doses or over an extended duration. Abruptly discontinuing benzodiazepines is strongly discouraged, as it can induce various withdrawal symptoms, some of which may escalate to seizures or fatality.

Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens are a group of drugs that exert potent effects on the mind, leading to alterations in perception, mood, and consciousness. These substances can induce different types of sensations, including hallucinations, distortions of reality, changes in consciousness, and various psychological effects.

There are two main types of hallucinogens: classic hallucinogens and dissociative hallucinogens. Both types can stimulate profound psychological effects, and their use can result in distress and notable alterations in mental health. Classic hallucinogens, such as LSD and psilocybin, induce vivid visual hallucinations. Contrarily, dissociative hallucinogens, such as ketamine and phencyclidine (PCP), generate a dissociative experience, causing individuals to feel detached from reality or their bodies.

Long-term use or overdosing on hallucinogens can, in certain instances, give rise to psychosis, hallucinations, and feelings of paranoia. Additionally, a risk of physical harm, including seizures and medical emergencies, is associated with their misuse.

Marijuana

Marijuana is derived from the cannabis plant and comprises over 100 compounds called cannabinoids. Among these compounds, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are the most prominent. THC is responsible for the psychoactive properties of marijuana, which induce euphoric effects, while CBD does not result in a high but has been associated with potential medical benefits.

Marijuana contains naturally occurring psychoactive compounds that can elicit depressant, stimulant, and hallucinogenic effects. While it is legal in certain states, numerous regulations still govern its purchase and consumption. The safety of marijuana use relies significantly on factors such as its source, purity, and dosage.

In certain instances, extended marijuana usage can result in addiction and dependence. Individuals who struggle with marijuana addiction often encounter withdrawal symptoms when they abruptly stop using the drug. These symptoms include irritability, anxiety, sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, restlessness, and intense cravings for marijuana.

Chronic marijuana use can also lead to long-term mental health issues, such as paranoia, anxiety, depression, and physical illnesses such as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), also known as “scromiting” (scream-vomiting).

Designer drugs

Designer drugs are created in laboratories to imitate the effects of established drugs such as cannabis, MDMA, and cocaine. However, these synthetic substances frequently contain elevated levels of chemicals compared to their naturally occurring counterparts found in plant-based drugs.

When purchasing designer drugs, people never truly know the chemical composition, leading to unpredictable impacts on the body and heightened health risks. Consequently, any newly emerging psychoactive substance (NPS) carries the potential to induce tremors, drug-induced psychosis, and violent outbursts.
